I had the honor of running this fun (um yeah) event with Alicia on a blustery Valentine's Day morn. If you've read the previous posts you know that I've not been up to par lately but I figured this was just a training run and a chance to mix up my racing experience. I was putting some subtle pressure on myself not to totally die since I figured Alicia and I had a good chance of doing pretty well in the overall standings and especially in the women's duo division.
After Google gave Alicia some terrible directions I finally found her (I mean who could miss the purple tights? These were actually perfect for spotting her as she rounded the turn about to hand off the baton to me each lap). We quickly devised that I would start the race since she still needed to warm up. I headed out for a mile warm-up and I swear to you I couldn't even feel my feet. I am typically a strong cold-weather runner so despite my initial misery of being out in the cold wind I knew it would work to my advantage later.
So a few minutes later we were off! The first leg was supposed to be 2.2 miles but it was more like 2.5. I knew I was hauling a tittle faster than I would be able to sustain but the adrenaline got the best of me. There was a tricky ice-covered hill in the first .5 mile but other than that the course was a rolling loop including a half-mile downhill at the end of every frap (which tore my quads up after eight rounds). My second wrap felt awesome and the third and fourth I slowed down a bit.
I should mention that in the ten to eleven minutes I waited for Alicia in between my laps I tried to keep loose walking around and stretching but I confess after three or four legs I was content just to stand and rest. That was probably a bad move as I tightened up like crazy. The fifth and sixth laps were uneventful but the seventh and eighth were agony. I had absolutely no juice left. Looking back I should have fueled at some point beyond swigs of Gatorade. I ate breakfast at about 7 AM ate a banana about 8:30 and we didn't start running until after 10 so by the time we finished it was after 1. I was hungry and depleted. Eh live and learn.
So we ended up finishing in 3:01:01 chip time or 6:50 pace. We were 10th out of 105 teams and won the women's 2-person team division by 50 minutes. Not too shabby! The breakdown of our race can be found HERE if you're interested. (Scroll down to #10) It should be easy to determine which runner was me and which was Alicia (I mean could she have been more consistent?).
My legs are shot but this race was a good tool for me. I was reminded about my need to work on pacing where I am speed-wise (not as speedy as I'd like to be) and how crucial race day nutrition is. My camera died but there's a photo floating around somewhere of Alicia and me after the finish as visual proof of our meeting!
