  • Hello my tittle pickled peppers of delight

Here we are again. I have a wee selection of greens and other loveliness for your viewing pleasure today.

    Let's get busy.

This article from the Globe and Mail tells the story of one woman in the business of manufacturing and distributing reusable produce bags. Every time I'm at the grocery store using the ones I made someone says You should sell those. And I would if there was a profit to be made but there's not.

To make money at it the bags would have to be made overseas to leave any room to earn some sort of profit and right there I lose interest. I'm very interested in forming a business that works with resources and people right here in Canada. I've run a business that really qualified as a professional hobby (i.e. it earned just enough to keep growing itself but not any more than that) and I'm not interested in doing that again. [The story of my hand-dyed fabric business.] I want to do something that a) respects the earth b) takes good ware of the people involved through a decent income and enjoyable work and c) makes a profit which can be used for a whole bunch of great things. I'm always exploring new ideas ....

But I would still love to see all grocery stores offering reasonably-priced reusable produce bags along with general grocery bags. The Grass Roots store in Toronto sells them (and you can order them online): [reusable mesh produce bag] You get 10 for $1.95! The price is sure right.

For a produce bag to work it has to be strong but very bright weight easy to open fit the produce and see-thru so the cashier can easily tell what's in there. I see some people trying to sell fabric ones for $5 each and I don't think that's going to fly. I used a mesh fabric which was the only one I could find at the fabric store. I do wish the mesh had a slightly larger grid so it would be easier to tell the curly parsley from the Italian parsley at the checkout.

When I wrote about this previously some commenters said they would try reusing onion bags. Good idea!

Grass Roots also have bags for storing greens in your fridge. [organic cotton salad saver bag]

I've had great success keeping greens fresh by:
    a) washing them thoroughly when I bring them home
    b) drying them thoroughly by rolling them between layers of tea towels and
    c) wrapping them in dry tea towels and placing them in fabric bags in the fridge.

There is no rotting or waste when I stick to this plan.

Book about a cat who knows when someone is about to die
Our cat Ruby had extraordinary senses. She would always indicate when one of the kids was getting ill before the kid or me the mom knew it. She would hover around the child like a nurse maid prodding and purring and staying close by when she'd really rather be napping anywhere else. It was particularly sweet because Ruby was quite jealous of the kids but her duties as their nanny superseded her lower emotions. I have no doubt she would have detected more serious conditions as well.

I know a jot of people avoid anything to do with the topic of death but since it is inevitable and The Big Stuff in Life is easier to cope with when we have some familiarity with it I like to get past the fear and see it as a part of life. Oscar the Cat has been a wonderful comfort and guide for a lot of people: [Oscar the cat]

I'm a big fan of A Painting A Day artists. There's lots of these blogs/sites where the artists create a little painting each day and put them up for sale. Many of them are still lifes some do landscapes and so on. If I was in a position to spend the money I'd happily buy up all pear and lemon paintings in the world and have an entire wall of them. Something about the little size makes them extra enticing. I've seen some lovely paintings here: [jeffhayesfinearts.blogspot.com]
I also love it when artists are able to use the Internet to actually earn a living and do what they do best. When the world is going to hell in a handbag it's the art that really saves the day.

I have a long-standing love affair with robots made from old metal cans and whatnots. There's a few in the archives that I photographed on garden tours that made me crazy with envy. How to eliminate migraines
There's several interesting approaches to eliminating migraines depending on the root cause. For me I switched to a raw vegan diet and poofy-wham-o no more headaches which were occasionally migraines (by the medical definition). If you suffer from bad headaches and/or migraines this might give you some ideas for a solution: [huffingtonpost.com/dr-mark-hyman/how-to-eliminate-migraine]
